John Cornwell runs a mining consultancy company, advising on the location of abandoned mine workings. In this book he draws on his many years experience working in Britain’s coalfields to recall the final days of the Somerset Coalfield. The book contains over 85 high quality photographs including scenes taken underground at Kilmersdon, Writhlington and Harry Stoke collieries. Many of the collieries in this coalfield were small – perhaps perceived as quirky by the standards of the super pits developed in the 20th century but they had a quality of their own which shines through in this unique collection.
